Learning how to achieve a 7day Turnaround time (TAT) in histopathology

Breakfast session

Cellular Pathology

The Improving Outcomes Strategy (IOS) for Cancer (DH 2011) set a simple aim to deliver health outcomes that are amongst the best in the world. Key to this is prevention and earlier diagnosis.

An aspiration of the IOS is to increase the numbers of people surviving at least 5 years beyond diagnosis and save 5,000 lives. Pathology has a key role to play. 5.7 million patients annually pass through the 180+ histopathology laboratories.

This presentation will demonstrate how it has been possible to achieve a 7 day end to end Turnaround time for Histopathology, using Lean methodology.

The presentation will focus on understanding customer requirements, Engaging Clinical staff, Improving productivity and safety and consider the challenges and mechanisms for change required to delivering such a service. The NHS Improvement Phase 1 pilot sites impacted on 290,000 patients across the 9 sites.
