POCT: opportunity knocks?

POCT

Clinical Chemistry

Where do the opportunities lie? In a cash-strapped NHS will investment in Point of Care Testing continue to be supported if it does not bring short term efficiency gains?

Evidence from the independent sector is one of continued growth in demand for simple devices like cholesterol meters in high street stores but also growing individual interest in health. The potential for diagnostic testing to support improving health creates roles and responsibilities in ensuring effective and safe use of such testing. The danger of knocking such opportunities is to lose "a piece of the action".

The knocking opportunity is one of support – providing analytical and clinical expertise, achieving accreditation, exploring joint working, potential for joint commissioning, capitalising on market share, contributing to delivery of better health and healthcare. This talk provides an overview of market trends in POCT, applications of POCT in different settings, preparation of business cases, communicating benefits of POCT and approaches to accreditation of services.
